Kasbah Mohayut

South & Sahara desert hotels, Erfoud & Merzouga

Kasbak Mohaut is a small earth hotel built right on the edge of the spectacular sand dunes of Merzouga.

ABOUT: A rustic ‘earth hotel’ situated on the very edges of Merzouga’s spectacular sand dunes, the auberge-style Kasbah Mohayut makes up in charm, friendliness and quality for what it lacks in luxury.  Simple and peaceful, it has pretty a pool, unexpectedly good food and two desert camps – allowing guests to spend a night under the Saharan stars.

ROOMS: Comfortable if not luxurious, rooms are lent character by canopied beds, Berber rugs, locally-made furniture and tadelakt (lime plaster) bathrooms.  They surround the main patio and pool; all have air-conditioning, but only some have a fireplace.  There are two main categories: Bungalows and Berber Suites, plus a Family Suite.

FACILITIES: Heavenly amid the desert heat, the main pool is centred in the focal courtyard.  A small restaurant serves quality Berber specialities, either in its dining room or on the roof terrace.   Make sure you catch at least one sunrise and sunset from this spot; better yet, see them from one of the Kasbah’s two desert bivouacs, at which guests can stay overnight, including a simple dinner.  One camp is reached by camel, the other via 4x4.

EXTRA INFO:  This area’s a treasure trove for fossil hunters, and the hotel can arrange tours of beds near Erfoud.  Gnaoua music concerts, flamingo-spotting trips and visits to the local apothecary are also possible, and guests may reserve a telescope in advance. There’s wi-fi throughout.

The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.

Kasbah Mohayut Reviews

location of the hotel really made it for us.

Kasbah Mohayut in Merzouga was fine. The food (they had some different tajine combos and homemade jams), people (Idil-who always seemed to be there), and location of the hotel really made it for us.

Simple as you had described.

Kasbah Mohayut was simple as you had described, which of course didn't matter as the room was just a parking spot for my bags.  The camp was also simple but all the better for it.  One night was plenty.

They did not speak much English!

We were less impressed with the hotel at Merzouga which was not quite as special (although we realise there may not be so much choice there). They did not speak much English which was difficult for us. For example we did not really understand what our different options were for seeing the dunes to their best advantage.

Nice meals...

Lovely staff and actually nice meals (Although again, no vegetarian main, but they accommodated with a special meal - as they did at the desert camp.)  The guide who took us out to the camp was very helpful and informative.

The best atmosphere.

The guesthouse/hotel here had the best atmosphere, was most welcoming, was the least stressful and most relaxing of all our
accommodation. And the Sahara was amazing - although it must be fairly unusual to sit on a dune looking over endless sand in the pouring rain.
