Baoussala

Coastal hotels & riads in Morocco, Essaouira

A 6 room ecolodge 10 km south of Essaouira with a homely feel.

ABOUT:

A few miles south of Essaouira – including a final track past donkeys and furiously-waving children – and inland from Sidi Kaouki’s wild surfing beaches, this charming eco-lodge is all about wellbeing and seclusion.  Though its salmon-coloured walls and antique window grilles are barely a decade old, Baoussala feels pleasingly authentic.  Styled as a homely riad, it sits soothingly amid a sea of argan, olive and eucalyptus trees.

ROOMS:

Framing the central courtyard are two brightly-coloured rooms and two bigger suites, including the African-styled Sahara Suite, and nautical-theme Blue Room with accompanying private patio.  Both the sunny Oasis Room and Marabout, a two-bed cottage boasting a lounge and private terrace, are found in the gardens.  Able to be rented as a whole, Baoussala has Wi-Fi but not air-conditioning: the gentle ocean breeze renders it unnecessary.

FACILITIES:

A dining room, a convivial kitchen, a cosy salon with fireplace, some eye-catching fabrics and various paintings by local artists are all found in the main house; above them is a beautiful roof terrace with one corner tented, Berber-style.  The walled garden has a 15m pool (usually heated all year round) and a hammam – massage cabins, steam room – to go with its jasmine plants, rose bushes, bougainvillea and mature trees.  There’s an abundance of spots to read, snooze and stargaze.

EXTRA INFO:

Available on request, traditional Moroccan lunches and three-course dinners are prepared by in-house chef M’bark, who’s a specialist in slow-cooking.

The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
