Azalai Desert Camp Chigaga

Desert Camps in South, Zagora & M'hamid

A small and comfortable bivouac, located on the Chegaga Dunes

ABOUT: Three hours from the Azalai Desert Lodge in Zagora, our luxury desert camp is a luxurious bivouac in serene Saharan isolation.  Spread over sixty acres of Erg Chigaga dunes, it comprises six canvas tents in an unusual style: instead of the usual wools and heavy armchairs, linens have been used to keep things cool, and a chic white-and-beige colour scheme termed as ‘Gentleman Voyageur’.

ROOMS: The four marquee-style accommodation tents are very romantic: think straw mats, lamps and soft shades. King-sized wrought-iron beds, Simmons mattresses, mosquito nets, bathrooms and separate hammams add extra indulgence.  A VIP tent comes with a dedicated butler and its own lounge-library.

FACILITIES: Moroccan-style dinners can either be taken inside the lounge tent, or in ‘open-air dining rooms’ erected in front of your own canvas. Pouffes and cushions are laid out nightly so guests can gaze up at the sensational starscape; a Sky Watcher telescope is also available. The camp can arrange picnics, camel rides and even putting on a temporary mini-green.

EXTRA INFO:  An amazing way to reach the camp is via helicopter from Marrakech, flying over the Atlas Mountains and its oasis valleys.  Alternatively, a Beachcraft plane can be chartered from Marrakech to Zagora (not to the camp itself).  Note that the helicopter may only fly in fine conditions (80% of the time), while the light aircraft can travel in all weathers.  Helicopters cost about £4,350 for one-way trips or returns within 24 hours; add £2,375 per extra night.  Cheaper, a one-way light aircraft trip is around £3,000 for up to nine passengers, with returns approximately £3,400.  Add £200 for each additional day.

The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
