Riads in Marrakech, Marrakech

Seven-room vibrant riad with dipping pool and hammam/massage suite

ABOUT: Appropriately glamorous, Riad Star is themed around Josephine Baker, the Jazz Age actress and French Resistance icon who once occupied its walls. Mannequins model her spangly gowns, trumpets sit on chairs and crackly black-and-white footage plays above the courtyard plunge pool. Modern-day starlets are met upon arrival at the taxi rank, from which a porter guides them past donkeys and spice-crammed sacks into the dense medina’s heart. Book a single room or the three-storey riad as a whole: either way, slick service and fine food are guaranteed by the British owners.

ROOMS: There are just seven attractive, colourful rooms, available in double or twin categories. All have ornate en-suite shower-rooms, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, minibars (non-alcoholic) and hair-dryers. For families, the Josephine and Star rooms can interconnect, with cots available. The top-floor Chiquita, named after Baker’s pet cheetah, has a private patio and L-shaped sofa.

FACILITIES: That courtyard can be covered by a rolling roof should the sun take a snooze. Up above, the large roof terrace offers city views, chaise longues and bougainvillea-filled urns, plus a wood-burning fireplace for cooler evenings. Further slumber options include a salon and the Hammam & Massage Suite (extra charge, paid locally). The stylish dining room also features an open fire to accompany its home-cooked Moroccan dinners (pre-order; about £16). Yoga classes on the patio can be arranged.

EXTRA INFO: The medina is maze-like, but Riad Star’s free smartphone app offers GPS guidance. Printed maps are also available.

The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
