Dar Les Cigognes

Riads in Marrakech, Marrakech

Facing the gates of the Royal Palace in the heart of the Medina, with 11 rooms and easy car access

ABOUT: The ‘House of the Storks’ is named after the elegant white birds who commonly perch atop adjacent buildings — still as statues.  Those neighbouring medina structures include the Royal Palace, which is right opposite.  In between is a street—enabling unusually good car access for a Marrakech riad—and on that street a discreet door, through which this sophisticated 11-room boutique awaits.  Once a wealthy merchant's home, ‘Cigognes’ was converted into a stylish, intimate hotel by fabled architect Charles Boccara.

ROOMS: Each room here is unique, drawing on Moorish art and décor.  Boasting king-sized beds and bathtubs, the three Superior Rooms can be twinned together, or with one of seven Deluxe Rooms.  Those all claim courtyard views, and most also offer a fireplace, bathtub and king-size bed to boot.  The Orientalist suite has a separate lounge with Palace views, plus a bathtub, big bed, walk-in wardrobe and fireplace.  It can be partitioned into two for families.

FACILITIES: After a hard day’s haggling, shoppers can recuperate inside the Fassi Beauty Spa, where massages, hammams and aromatherapy are all available.  Alternatively, sip complimentary mint teas up on a large, flowery roof terrace, or spread out on a sofa beside the courtyard’s fruit trees and fountain.  The Dar’s excellent restaurant serves seasonal Moroccan dishes: look out for tangia, a local beef stew, and buttery pancakes with quail and lemon sauce.

EXTRA INFO:  Having previously published a cookbook, the Dar now offers daily cookery classes.

For your Marrakech riad holiday at the Dar Les Cigognes, call us on 0207 112 0019 to discuss your plans.

The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
