The Hidden Sides of Marrakech

Excursions from Marrakech, Marrakech

An exciting and interesting exploration of the deep and authentic side of the old city of Marrakech.

You will see the traditional hustle and bustle of the inhabitants of the old city and understand their way of life, as well as some of the remains of the glorious past of this ancient medieval capital of Morocco.

We start by going through one of the historical gates of the old Medina and walk on to discover the medieval way-of-life of its inhabitants and their daily routines.

We will cross some of the oldest districts in the Medina of Marrakesh. Along the way, you will hear children from the Koranic schools reciting verses, you will see old fountains, historical gates, visit an old bakery and taste the local bread, see a furnace that heats one of the public steam baths and learn the role they play in the social life of each district.

Visit the 16th century Ben Youssef theological school, considered as one of the highlights of Moroccan architecture in Marrakech. If the calligrapher is there, we will have a demonstration of the exotic and intricate calligraphy of the Arabic culture.

Visit a sumptuous Moorish palace that was  the home of a Moroccan minister until the end of the 19th century and admire the marvellous Moorish architecture as well as an interesting collection of antiques ranging from the art of embroidery to ethnic jewellery and the fine blue and polychrome traditional pottery.

See the archaeological site of the Almoravid dynasty dome, which is the oldest monument in Marrakech, dating back to the early 12th century, a short time after the city was founded and became the capital of Morocco.

Discover the hidden districts and the historical caravanserai (called Fondouks) once used as inns for the caravan traders. They are still in use today by Marrakech artisans who have set up their workshops in many of them to perpetuate their varied ancestral skills.
